Born -- STEINBECK -- at Stockton, Aug. 25th, to the wife of W.P.
STEINBECK, a daughter.
Judge Geo. W. SMITH died at San Diego, Aug. 22. Deceased was the father
of Mrs. Walter C. JOHNSON, formerly of this place and was an old pioneer
of California.

Born -- GOSPODNETICH -- in Hollister, Aug. 31, to the wife of A.
GOSPODNETICH, a daughter.
Born -- CASTRO -- at New Idria, Aug. 26, to the wife of Fred CASTRO, a
son.
Died -- AUSTIN -- at Santa Cruz, Sept. 7, Mrs. L.B. AUSTIN, a native of
Missouri, aged 83 years, 6 mos., 10 days. [ a sister of Rev. A. MARTIN.
The funeral was held at the IOOF cemetery yesterday, where the interment
took place.]
Died -- McNAMARA -- near Hollister, Sept. 6, John McNAMARA, a native of
Ireland, aged 75 years, 5 mos., 4 days. [ an old resident of this valley,
died at the residence of Mr. M. WILSON, in Fairview The funeral was held
from the Sacred Heart Church, Wed., and was largely attended. Interment
at Catholic cemetery.]
Died -- OJEDA -- near Tres Pinos, Sept. 8, Andrew, beloved son of
Mr.&Mrs. J.E. OJEDA, a native of California, aged 15 years, 13 days. [Ill
only since last Sunday, Andrew, eldest son of Mr.&Mrs. Joaquin OJEDA,
passed away yesterday morning at the home of his parents in the Las
Aguilas. He was stricken with peritonitis Sunday Andrew was barely 16,
just reaching the age when he could be of service to his father, whose
constant companion he was Kind, affectionate, always to be depended upon,
a boy of whom any father could be proud The funeral will be held from the
Church of the Sacred Heart this morning at 10am. Interment at the
Catholic cemetery.]
Mrs. Harvey YEAMAN died at Pacific Grove last Wednesday, aged 84 years.
Mr. YEAMAN was an early resident of Hollister.
M.E. CROWELL, a former route agent of Wells, Fargo & Co., died in San
Francisco, Aug. 31. Mr. CROWELL was one of Wells-Fargos oldest
employees, having been with the company for over 47 years. He was well
and favorably known to a large number of our citizens.

Born -- SILVA -- in Hollister, Sept. 5, to the wife of J.C. SILVA, a son.
Died -- DEAN -- in Serena, Ill., Sept. 9, Erastus P. DEAN, father of Mrs.
F.L. BARNHISEL, aged 75 years, 6 mos., 25 days.
Prof. C. ALLEN died in San Jose last Saturday. Prof. ALLEN was principal
of the State Normal school at San Jose for 18 years and was one of the
best known educators in California. He was 76 years of age at the time of
his death.

STEPHENS, a son.
Born -- REINHART -- in Hollister, Sept. 14, to the wife of J.A. REINHART,
a daughter.
Born -- DAVIS -- in Hollister, Sept. 19, to the wife of Fred A. DAVIS, a
son.
Born -- WILLIAMSON -- in Hollister, Sept. 17, to the wife of H.W.
WILLIAMSON, a son.
Died -- WILLIAMSON -- in Hollister, Sept. 17, infant son of Mr.&Mrs. H.W.
WILLIAMSON.
Died -- SMITH -- in San Jose, Sept. 17, Belle, beloved wife of Antone
SMITH, daughter of John GARCIA, aged 32 years, 7 mos. [ She had been a
sufferer from lung trouble for several years A few weeks ago she
contracted a severe cold, which, owing to the weakened condition of her
lungs, rapidly developed into pneumonia and the end came after a short
illness. A year ago last Jan., she was married to Antone SMITH and went
with her husband to San Jose to live Belle GARCIA SMITH was born at Half
Moon Bay, coming to Hollister with her parents in 1877. Kind, gentle and
affectionate, she had many friends The funeral was held from the Catholic
church, Tuesday, where a requiem mass was celebrated ]
Died -- McILROY -- at Gilroy, Sept. 19, Capt. Robt. H. McILROY, a native
of Ohio, aged 84 years. [Passing of a Pioneer -- The funeral of Capt.
R.H. McILROY was held from IOOF hall Tuesday, Sep. 20th Mr. McILROY died
at Gilroy last Monday after a lingering illness of some weeks At the time
of his death he had reached the ripe old age of 4 score & 4 years. Capt.
McILROY was an early resident of San Benito county, locating in
Hollister, where he engaged in business, in 1870. After leaving Hollister
he purchased property at Emmet, where he conducted a hotel for many
years. He disposed of this property several years ago and moved to
Gilroy, where he resided up to the time of his death. He got his military
title from having served as Captain of Co. E, First California cavalry,
which was stationed in Arizona during the civil war for nearly 20 years
was a Justice of the Peace of Tres Pinos township.]
Death of Raymond VAUGHN -- Raymond VAUGHN, son of Mr.&Mrs. Geo. VAUGHN,
who formerly lived in the Comstock district, was found dead near a
chicken ranch opposite his home last Wednesday week. The body lay
straight and composed, and in the head were 3 bullet wounds, any one of
which was of itself sufficient to cause almost instant death. On one side
laid his rifle and on the other his hat. There was no sign of any
struggle the authorities of Santa Cruz county are making strict
investigation into the cause of his death.
>From the Watsonville Register -- Raymond has been living with his
parents on the GALLY place on the Salsipuedes road, about a mile from
town. A short distance further up the road is a chicken ranch, run by Mr.
WALDORF, who has been away on a camping trip, and in whose absence
Raymond has kept an eye on the place and spent his nights there How the
tragedy occurred will perhaps never be known
Albert WILLSON died at his home near Gilroy last Thursday. Mr. WILLSON
was an old and highly respected citizen of Santa Clara county and was
well and favorably known to many of our citizens. He was a brother of Mr.
Dan WILLSON of San Juan.
Captain Thos. N. WILLIAMS died, Thursday evening, in a San Francisco
hospital from the effects of a surgical operation which he had recently
undergone. The news of his death was a great shock to his many friends in
San Benito county, who were unaware of his sickness. Captain WILLIAMS was
superintendent of the New Idria mines for a number of years, during which
time he took a prominent part in the affairs of the county He leaves a
widow & 6 children, one of whom, Mrs. Susie BOWEN, resides at Hollister.
Mr. WILLIAMS was born in Cornwall, England and was 65 years of age at the
time of his death. The funeral was held from the family resident in San
Jose, Sunday
Conover R. AUSTIN was married to Miss Florence LIPSCOMBE at the home of
the brides parents, on West street, Wed. morning, Rev. M.S. BUSH
officiating They will occupy the LIPSCOMBE residence on Powell street on
their return.
Wm. SHIRLEY, a former Hollister resident, is the guest of his sister,
Mrs. J.I. HODGES.

Born -- DOWDY -- in San Juan, Sept. 26, to the wife of Elmer DOWDY, a
son.
Born -- GARRETT -- in the San Juan valley, Sept. 26, to the wife of R.E.
GARRETT, a daughter.
Born -- BUTTS -- in Hollister, Sept. 27, to the wife of Robt. BUTTS, a
son.
Died -- SANDI -- in Santa Ana, Sept. 26, Joseph Raymond, son of Mr.&Mrs.
J.M. SANDI, aged about 4 years. [ at the home of his parents stricken
with pneumonia lived but a few days after he became ill. The funeral was
held from the Catholic church Tuesday.]
Died -- ELLIS -- in Hollister, Sept. 26, Mrs. Elizabeth J. ELLIS, mother
of W.P. ELLIS, a native of North Shields, England, aged 86 years. [ at
the residence of Mr. ELLIS Mrs. ELLIS, who resides in San Francisco, was
on a visit to her son at the time of her death. She was taken with a
hemorrhage of the lungs Friday and owing to her advanced age, 86 years,
was unable to rally from the shock. The funeral was held Wednesday and
was largely attended.]
