The dead body of a man was found in the hills on the CURTNER ranch,
Panoche, last Friday by a shepherd employed on the ranch. From
appearances the man had been dead 2 or 3 months. In his pocket was found
a memorandum book in which was written the name, F.H. MEYER, Stedman
P.O., San Bernardino county, and instructions to notify the German
Savings and Loan Society, San Francisco, in case of death or accident.
Some little distance from the body a roll of blankets was found, in which
was a miners candle. At the inquest held by Coroner BLACK at Panoche the
jury brought in a verdict of death from natural causes. It is supposed
that the unfortunate fellow, while on the way to the New Idria mines, in
search of work, got lost and strayed into the hills, when he was overcome
by some sudden sickness and died. There is no suspicion of foul play.
Benjamin K. THORNE, former Sheriff of Calaveras county, the man who
captured Black Bart, died at the home of his daughter in San Francisco

the notorious stage robber. Black Bart is now living a life of ease and
is receiving a large pension from the Wells-Fargo Express Co., to keep
him from tampering with the companys strong boxes. THORNE also captured
Joaquin MURIETTA.
