A CELEBRATED CASE
Judge BREEN Decides in Favor of the Defendant, Abel SOBERANES.
The suit of Benito SOBERANES, as guardian ad litem for his mother, against Abel SOBERANES has just been decided by Judge BREEN. The action was commenced for the purpose of setting aside a certain deed of gift made by Mrs. Ysabel B. DE SOBERANES conveying to her son Abel 3950 acres of the Soledad ranch and certain othe real estate in the town of Monterey estimated to be worth $100,000. The complaint alleged that Mrs. SOBERANES was, at the time of making the conveyance, of unsound mind and mentally incompetent to transact business. Mr. DELMAS of San Francisco and Don Miguel SMITH appeared as counsel for the guardian ad litem, MYRICK & DEERING and WEBB & KEARNEY were the attorneys for Abel SOBERANES, and W. M. E. PARKER and Thos. RENISON represented Mrs. SOBERANES, who denied that her son Benito had any authority to institute the proceedings. The decision confirms the deed to Abel SOBERANES, and this reinstates him as the lawful owner of one of the finest ranches in M!
onterey county. The TRIBUNE congratulates him on his victory.


A BUCKEY EXPLODES
Last Saturday morning Miss Edith IMLAY was the victim of a peculiar accident, which was atended with painful results. Mr. IMLAY had returned home the day previous from the mountains bringing with him some buckeyes. Miss IMLAY undertook to cook the buckeyes by baking some in the oven, preparatory to testing their quality as an article of food. She had transfered the nuts from the oven to a cup, when they exploded with a sharp noise, the fragments striking the young lady in the face. Her face was badly burned and her eyes closed. She suffered intese pain for several days, but at the present writing she is in a fair way to recover from the effects of the explosion. Watsonville Rustler


STABBED IN THE ARM.
Matta NICHOLS Slashes a Drunken Man in Alleged Self-Defense.
In an altercation Monday in front of SCHOONOVER's stables, says the Salinas Journal, Matta NICHOLS stabbed an old man named John KENSLEY, who was intoxicated and using obscene language in the presence of ladies and childre. NICHOLS claims that he remonstrated . . . . [Sorry. My copy ends here]


[Short Personal Items]

Henry MENKE, proprietor of the Salinas brewery, was in town Tuesday. His beer is still the favorite beverage with those who indulge in that luxury.

Special Agent R. H. NAUNTON, representing the Commercial Union Assurance Company, was in town Wednesday looking after the company's interests.

Henry TURNER returned from San Jose Tuesday, where he had been to attend the funeral of Charles McKIRNEN, a capitalist and pioneer of Santa Clara county.

Will BROCKMANN, Harry HORTSON and several others went to the river last Sunday and caught forty-four salmon, weighing from eight to fifteen pounds each.

Chris TWISSELMAN, mine host of the Gonzales Hotel, drove to Salinas Tuesday morning, took the early train from there to San Francisco and returned on Wednesday.

If you want to make Fred WIDEMAN, the popular book-keeper at SARLES & WIDEMAN's real mad just ask him how he likes fishing for salmon by the light of the moon. We tried it, but got off by treating [him?] to cigars.

Miss Hannah CRUESS of Cruessville, who has been making an extended visit in San Jose, arrived in town Tuesday on her way home. During her stay here she was the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas RENISON.

M. J. O'BRIEN of Merced has accepted the position of salesman with the mercantile firm of TOFT & Co. of this place. Mr. O'BRIEN is a married man and will permanently locate here. His wife is expected to arrive next week. We welcome them to our town.

R. H. LOUGHHEAD, insurance surveyor, representing the Sanborn-Perris Map Company, was in town this week preparing a map for the use of the insurance companies and their agents. It will be the best insurance map of the town that has yet been issued.


Soledad Items.

L. E. SOBERANES had rented the Oak Grove hotel.

Miss Kate McPHIE left for Salinas on Monday last.

Dust begins to fly behind the plows. More rain is needed.

Salmon are getting to be very plentiful in the river below Soledad.

No wonder Mr. BINGAMAN felt happy Monday morning, as a young son was the cause of it.

A. Y. BARNWELL, the former clerk for S .J. KITZMILLER, had taken a position as clerk in H. E. DAVIS' store.

Some of the young men of Soledad paid King City a flying visit this week for the purpose of getting their hair cut.

The Soledad club met at the residence of Miss Maud EUBANKS last Saturday evening. Those present were Miss Laurine JOHNSON, Doctress GREEN, T. W. MILLER and Neils NEILSON.
