January 27, 1906 Page 8 WEDDED AND PARTED WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), January 27 - Only one marriage license was issued this week in Yolo County - Jas. A. TREECE, age 67, and Mrs. Martha STONE, age 54, both of Woodland. Two interlocutory decrees of divorce were granted by Judge GADDIS this week. Richard LEE from Mattie LEE, on the ground of desertion; Mrs. Permelia CHANDLER from Geo. W. CHANDLER on the same grounds. Mrs. Sue B. JOBSON has applied for a divorce from C.W. JOBSON. Cruelty is given as the grounds. SHASTA COUNTY REDDING, January 27 - Business in the matrimonial line has been brisk during the week now closing. Marriage licenses were issued to the following couples: Dr. A.B. GILLILAND, aged 56, of Cottonwood, and Mrs. L.C. WILSON, aged 49, of Chicago; Frank VINSON, aged 22, and Harny MILES, aged 19, both of Shasta; Aron SMITH, aged 21, and Selma A. SMITH, aged 20, both of Round Mountain; Clayton D. ROSS, aged 29, of Kennett, and Christina ZERR, aged 19, of Knob; Emil BRODIKE, aged 24, of South Africa, and Carrie ELMORE, aged 20, of Copley. May NAFCEY has begun an action for divorce from William E. NAFCEY. Elizabeth MATHENY received an interlocutory decree of divorce from Clement V. MATHENY. COLUSA COUNTY COLUSA, January 27 - County Clerk J.W. CRUTCHER has issued only one marriage license during the week. This was granted to Carl APPLEGATE, of Sterling City and Alice APPLEGATE, of Princeton, and marks the beginning of the second trip of this same couple on the matrimonial sea. They were married once before, but obtained a final decree of divorce last March. Their first marriage was Mrs. Applegate's second or third plunge intomatrimony. BUTTE COUNTY OROVILLE, January 27 - But one marriage license was issued from the County Clerk's office this week - Charles H. WEST, over 21 years of age, and Mrs. Addie Amelia GRAY, over 21 years of age, both residents of Chico. Sadie PIGGOTT was granted an interlocutory decree of divorce from C.H. PIGGOTT. Myrtle E. EBI was granted an interlocutory decree from Charles E. EBI, and Ethel J. HOLLAND's final decree from George A. HOLLAND. PLACER COUNTY AUBURN, January 27 - Final divorce decree was made to Lucy A. ALLEN against Elithu ALLEN, yesterday. YUBA COUNTY MARYSVILLE, January 27 - The following marriage licenses have been issued since last report: D.W. ISAACS, of Oroville, and Annie M. McCRANK, of Wyandotte; H.W. BUCHANAN, of Sacramento, and Miss Sadie WOMACK, of Sheridan; James M. MAYNARD, of Hammon and Gertrude PLASKETT, of Yuba City. TEHAMA COUNTY RED BLUFF, January 27 - Two marriage licenses were issued by the County Clerk this week, and there was one interlocutory decree granted. The licenses were to: John MULDERICK, 32 years old, a resident of Paskenta, and Miss Ethel DUNCAN, 18 years old, of Lowrey, both being natives of California. George Henry PHILLIPS and Miss Katie Belle MASTON, both residents of this city. The wedding was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.O. MASTON, the bride's parents, and Rev. H.V. MOORE was the officiating clergyman. In the Superior Court Judge ELLISON granted an interlocutory decree and custody of the minor children to Lana B. GIBSON against John N. GIBSON, the husband's default being entered. The parties were residents of Lyonsville. BELIEVES WIFE ELOPED WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), January 27 - William GREEN, a colored man, left yesterday for Stockton in search of John HENDERSON, a white, whom he accuses of having eloped with his wife. Mrs. Green has not been seen since Thursday. Henderson was employed by Sheriff GRIFFIN as a horse trader, and left Thursday for San Francisco. It is said the two have been intimate for some time. LEININGER WILL FOLLOW SWASEY On Latter's Recommendation, Senator Perkins Will Present Former's Name as Register of Land Office REDDING (Shasta Co.), January 27 - C.W. LEININGER, now teaching school in Chico, but really a resident of Trinity County, a part of this Federal Land District, will succeed Frank M. SWASEY as Register of the United States Land Office in this city, and in all probability will act as Receiver also, as it is likely the two positions will be consolidated. This news was made public here this morning. Some time ago Register Swasey wrote to Senator Perkins saying he was not an aspirant to succeed himself, as he had held the office eight years, and he wound up by recommending Mr. Leininger. This morning he received a reply from Senator Perkins complimenting him upon the way he had conducted the office and stating he would recommend Mr. Leininger, as requested. Swasey's term expires on March 5, 1906. This is considered quite a victory for the Swasey end of the Republican Party here. As announced in yesterday's Bee, J.L. COYLE of Hornbrook withdrew from this race several days ago. He was backed by Senator COGINS, and the opinion here is that the Senator wanted to get him out of the legislative race, as a probable rival. BURNS END LIFE OF MRS. SMITH REDDING (Shasta Co.), January 27 - Miss Elizabeth SMITH, who was badly burned Tuesday night at the office of the Nash Mercantile Company, through the overturning of an oil stove, as fully told in The Bee of Wednesday, died last night at 10:20 at the home of her parents here. The news of her death has caused profound grief in Redding. Miss Smith was well known and popular, and to die as she did causes her friends to sorrow more than ever. FEAR CONSTABLE IS LOST IN THE WOODS RED BLUFF (Tehama Co.), January 27 - To-day noon a search party headed by Sheriff WARD left here to look for Constable Richard MARTIN, who left here yesterday to serve a warrant on a man near Finley Lake. This morning word was received that Martin's horse and buggy had been found tied to a fence along the road, but that no trace of him could be found. As he is old and near-sighted, it is feared Martin wandered off in the woods and became lost. If so, he probably passed the night in that way, and the exposure may kill him. ELLIS LAKE COMPANY MARYSVILLE (Yuba Co.), January 27 - The subscribers to the fund for the improvement of Ellis Lake have decided to incorporate under the name of the Ellis Lake Improvement Company, with a capital stock of $20,000, covered by the issuance of 2000 shares of $10 each. The Directors are as follows: C.S. BROOKS, C.F. AARON, W.H. PARKS, W.T. ELLIS, Jr., C.J. COVILLAND, George W. HARNEY and Sameuel EWELL. SUTTER PIONEER DEAD YUBA CITY (Sutter Co.), January 27 - Thomas D. KIRK, a pioneer resident of this county, quietly passed away last evening at the home place, south of this city, after a prolonged illness. He was born in Giles County, Virginia, on the 27th of February, 1823, and had he lived until the 27th of next month, he would have celebrated his eighty-third birthday. The deceased was a very kind and highly respected citizen, and leaves besides a wife, one son, Charles J. KIRK, and three daughters - Mrs. N.B. KIRTLEY and Mrs. W.A. FORD, of Ukiah, and Mrs. T.L. SMITH, of this county. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 10 o'clock from the late home and interment will be in the Sutter City Cemetery. SPROUT IN COURT YUBA CITY (Sutter Co.), January 27 - William SPROUT, accused of attempted bank robbery and jail breaking, was brought before Judge K.S. MAHON in the Superior Court here this morning. Attorneys A.C. McLAUGHLIN and A.H. HEWITT were appointed by the Court to defend the prisoner, and Wednesday, January 31st, was the date set for him to plead. WHITE MAN SHOOTS NEGRO IN QUARREL CHICO (Butte Co.), January 27 - John HENDERSON, a negro, who is a stranger here, was shot and wounded last night by Edward A. BLACK, a white man. Black claims he was assaulted by Henderson, and shot in self-defense. The bullet entered Henderson's face about an inch below the right eye, and followed the cheek bone, coming out in the lower part of the right side of the face. Black has been arrested and a charge of assault to commit murder has been placed against him.
