MADE UGLY CHARGE AGAINST HIS WIFE
MARYSVILLE (Yuba Co.), January 29 - One D.V. BROWN, of Oroville, who confesses to four different estrangements with his wife, came to Marysville Saturday to complain to the District Attorney of the actions of Mrs. Brown, whom he accuses of having illicit relations with a young man named William BURKE, a lodger in the same house where the woman resides with her sixteen-months-old babe.
When the charge was laid at Burke's door, he, like Mrs. Brown, entered a positive denial. The woman was notified that if her husband's account is true she must proceed to leave town or ignore Burke.
Mrs. Brown asserts that her husband has acted in a cruel manner toward her. Not long ago he wrote her to join him at Oroville, promising her better fare than in the past. Instead, he sought to have her go to work as a servant in the hotel where he is employed as cook.
FOR BOULEVARD
MARYSVILLE (Yuba Co.), January 29 - The Ellis Lake Improvement Club has purchased of Edward KENNISON the latter's property on D Street near Thirteenth for use as part of the boulevard to be built on the shores of the lake.
THREATENED TO KILL SLAYER OF BROTHER
AUBURN (Placer Co.), January 29 - The preliminary examination of P. ALESANDRO for the killing of P. GHILARDUCCI at Rocklin was held on Saturday, and Justice WALDEN withheld action and the prisoner was returned to jail in this city.
The report that the dead man's brother had sworn to kill the prisoner on sight created quite a ripple of excitement here, and the officials at Rocklin advised having extra deputies accompany the prisoner, but Sheriff KEENA did not consent to this and went with the prisoner himself without assistance. The man who made the threats against Alesandro disappeared and has not been heard of. There was no demonstration whatever among the countrymen of the parties to the tragedy as was feared by some.
There is no doubt that the prisoner will be discharged, as all the evidence shows his act to have been justified. The Justice's delay of action is thought to be to avoid releasing the prisoner in Rocklin, where it was feared he might be attacked.
MAIL CARRIER WILL LOSE FROZEN FEET
YREKA (Siskiyou Co.), January 29 - The Bee representative has just learned from J.F. YOUNG, stage driver on the Colonel Stone line from here to Etna, that Herbert FINLEY, who has carried the mail from Etna to Sawyer's Barr for the past twenty-five years, had the misfortune to freeze both of his feet on Thursday evening while on his return trip from down the Salmon River.
It seems that one of the snow shoes on the hind foot of the mule that was carrying a heavy load of mail became loose, and fearing that it would come off entirely, and that he would not be able to make the trip over the rough trail, Finley attempted to fix it. Not having the proper tools, he failed, and consequently was compelled to walk part of the way to Etna, a distance of ten miles. It was a bitter cold day, and the snow in places very deep. It is thought that both feet will have to be amputated.
FIND BODY AT FOOT OF CLIFF
Former Sheriff Richard Martin, of Tehama, Loses Way and Falls to His Death While Hunting Guide RED BLUFF (Tehama Co.), January 29 - The dead and bruised body of Richard MARTIN, Constable and former Sheriff of this county, was found this morning at the foot of a steep cliff near Grecian Bend, about twenty-five miles from Red Bluff, and not far from where his team was discovered.
As told in The Saturday Bee, Martin left for the Finley lake neighborhood to serve a warrant, and the finding of his abandoned team that morning aroused the fear that harm had befallen him. It is thought that he left his horses to go to the cabin of J.J. PAYNE, who was to act as his guide to the home of the man he held a warrant against, and losing the way, being very near-sighted, fell over the cliff to his death.
Sheriff BOYD returned last midnight and reported that up to that hour no trace of the missing man had been found. Twenty-five searchers were going over the ground in close order that no spot might be overlooked, when he left the scene. He returned to get hounds and clothing belonging to Martin, but of course will not need them now. Martin was last seen alive about 3 o'clock Friday afternoon, three miles or so from Bucks Flat.
Martin served as Sheriff of Tehama in 1882 and 1884. He leaves a widow and four children, two residing here, one at Dunsmuir and the other at Santa Rosa. All the children are in town, the absent ones coming to join in the search for their father. Mrs. Martin has not yet been told of the finding of her husband's body, as she is very excitable and it is feared the shock will prove too much for her to stand.
BLACKLEG PREVALENT
NEVADA CITY (Nevada Co.), January 29 - Cattlemen of Indian Flat and the Jones Bar section, west of this city, are greatly alarmed over the threatened decimation of their herds from blackleg. Within the past two weeks at least twenty-five head of cattle have succumbed to the disease. Vaccination is now being pushed with a vigor, as the cattle raisers have been thoroughly awakened to their danger. The heaviest losers are Willis
GREEN, Ben ROSE and Harry LOUCH.
HEIRS TO ESTATE IN OLD MISSISSIPPI
GRASS VALLEY (Nevada Co.), January 29 - Reading almost like a romance is the story which has developed through a letter from B.A. MAYO, of Morrilton, Ark., which promises a valuable inheritance to E.M. TAYLOR and sister, Mrs. Charles BARKER, in their father's old home state, Mississippi, which he left in 1851 for California. Mr. Mayo, a boyhood friend of William TAYLOR, has written here for information relative to the latter, stating that by the recent death of James and Hugh CAMERON in Mississippi, a plantation of about 500 acres is left to Taylor or his heirs.
William Taylor settled in Penn Valley, west of this city, in 1851. His death occurred here about fourteen years ago. Two of his three children, E.M. Taylor and Mrs. Barker, survive. The Camerons mentioned were their uncles, from whom they had not heard for many years. Mr. Taylor is a leading groceryman of this city, and will at once take steps to investigate the matter for himself and sister.
SAYS HE WILL FIND VAN HOETER'S SLAYER
GRASS VALLEY (Nevada Co.), January 29 - Interest in the foul murder of Robert VAN HOETER, the eccentric old miner whose body was found recently in the bottom of Coon Hollow Ravine, is revived by mysterious movements of James PERDUE, a local man, who claims he will land the $650 reward for the capture of the murderer.
Perdue is a private citizen, but has great confidence in his ability as a Sherlock Holmes. A short time ago he privately announced that he could land the criminal inside of two weeks, but was waiting for a sufficient reward to be hung up before putting in his time on the job. Now that the county, State and Sheriff WALKER have offered rewards aggregating the above amount, Perdue is at work. He maintains a close mouth regarding his investigations and their results.
Meanwhile Sheriff Walker himself is not idle. He has been quietly working on the case ever since the body was found, and has not abandoned hope of bringing the right man to justice. He is anxious to aid anybody who will take up the matter, and states that the will give an additional $00 should Perdue or anybody else arrest the slayer.
SKELETON NOT THAT OF MISSING HUNTER
KENNETT (Shasta Co.), January 29 - The Coroner's jury finds that the skeleton discovered sticking in a sand bank two miles above this place Saturday is not that of Carl MILLER, as given out. Miller, it will be recalled, left here on a hunting trip just before the recent big storm and has not been heard from since. It is believed that he died from exposure. Money he left on deposit here has not been called for. Who the skeleton belonged to cannot be even guessed. It is entirely devoid of flesh, but hair hear near it appeared it to be that of a white man.
WESTERN NEVADA STATE NEWS
BEGINNING OF LABOR TROUBLE
Fear Bloody Battle At Cliffords Between Union and Non-Union Men Inaugurated War to Finish
TONOPAH (Nev.), January 29 - Jack GINEAU is dead and George COLE has a gunshot wound in his right arm as the result of a battle between Union and non-Union metal miners that took place at Cliffords, thirty-five miles from Tonopah Saturday afternoon late. Cole, who is a member of the Nevada Legislature, and Gineau, who was a prominent miner, with several others went to Cliffords in the interest of the Western Federation of Miners to see if the miners at the new camp were receiving the scale, which is $5 a day. They were met with a cool reception, and in a dispute that followed, the non-Union men opened fire. Gineau received a fatal wound, and was dead in a few hours. Sheriff LOGAN arrested eight of the non-Unionists, who are being held in jail here to answer to charges of murder.
This, it is feared, will be the forerunner of other and more serious disturbances between the Union and non-Union forces. Southern Nevada is controlled by the Colorado Unionists who were driven form Cripple Creek, Independence and Telluride by the State militia, and they have completely organized every important camp in this section. They have, on several occasions, expelled non-Union miners and mine operators who have come here from Colorado, the local authorities making no resistance.
Thus far the mine owners have not tried to break the power of the Union, the latter having proceeded cautiously in the matter of wages, placing the scale at a figure that is never above, and generally below, that received by other skilled workmen.
Held For Robbery
WINNEMUCCA (Nevada), January 29 - Jim TAYLOR, who is charged with being the lone robber that held up the Club Saloon and gambling house at this place on the evening of January 8th, getting away with about $1000 in cash, has been held to answer to the Grand Jury after a preliminary hearing which lasted for six days. Taylor contested the case, stoutly maintaining his innocence, but he was held on the strength of the story told by Joe MESSERSMITH, a sheepherder, who claims that Taylor tried to induce him to assist him in the robbery. Taylor is a ranch hand and cattleman and was taken at Golconda a few days after the hold-up occurred.
