Article Title: Salisbury Times
Article Date: February 28 1944

Article Description: WHALE HARPOONED IN LEWES-REHOBOTH CANAL

Article Text:

REHOBOTH BEACH FEB 28 1944
The whale, with a harpoon wound behind it head, that came into the Lewes-Rehoboth canal at Lewes last Wednesday is still being sought by local fisherman. Two Rehoboth Beach sportsmen, Robert Savage, custodian of Henlopen Acres and James Price, owner of the Rehoboth Fish Market, said that they had formed a whaling party of two to catch it near the Rehoboth Yatch Basin. In a small bateau with a borrowed harpoon, they had succeded in spearing the whale back of it head. " She took a sudden dive under our boat" Price said, " and almost upset us before the harpoon came out. So we decided to let her go. The last we saw of the whale it was headed back to Lewes on a flood tide". Cod fishermen out of Indian River Inlet say several whales have been see recently off Cape Henlopen.
