Death of Col J. P. W. REID

This well-known and highly esteemed gentleman died suddenly at his residence in Campbell, near this city, Sunday night. He had been complaining for several days, but nothing serious was apprehended until Sunday night, when he was taken with a congestive chill, and expired shortly thereafter. Col REID was a gallant Confederate soldier, being Lieutenant Colonel of Artillery in Longstreets Corps, was severely wounded at Gettysburg, and lost an arm at Fort Fisher. In 1871 he came to this county from Savannah, and purchased a tract of land near Burtons Creek, upon which he has resided ever since. Col REID was 56 years old, a man of integrity, and leaves a host of friends and admirers to mourn his untimely death. The funeral services will take place this morning at 11:30 oclock from the Church of the Holy Cross.
