POLICEMAN HELD FOR SHOOTING POLICEMEN
William Johnson Suspected of Murderous Assault.
Policeman William JOHNSON, of the Fourth precinct, is held at that station on suspicion of having been the assailant of Policemen Frank WATERS and U. E. HALL, also of the Fourth, who were shot at First and N Streets early this morning.
While the evidence against JOHNSON is circumstantial, an apparently clear case has been made out which clears away the mysterious details. The only missing link to the complete solution of the affray is the failure to establish a motive.
An examination of the wounded policemen's injuries was made at the Emergency Hospital early this morning. It was learned that WATERS had been shot twice, one ball entering the left side of the back and the other passing through his right hand. His condition is considered serious. HALL was shot through the right arm. The bullet was extracted and he was permitted to go home.
It is believed that JOHNSON was jealous of WATERS' attentions to a young woman with whom both are acquainted.
