I will tell you what I know as fact about my James NEWTON. He was born 27
Apr 1844 in Terre Haute, IN to "Mary" ? . He had a brother, Owen and one
Daniel. Daniel was killed in the Civil War. All three brothers were in the
civil War. The two older brothers went to war before James, but as soon as
James turned 17 he joined them. In fact, James and Daniel were doing picket
duty when Daniel was killed, so James did see his brother die. Now James was
married three times. First to Eliza FUNKHOUSER. Married 18 August 1865 in
TerreHaute, IN. They had two boys: William Andrew, 29 July 1866 and Louis
Grant,20 Oct 1869, also in TerreHaute, IN. Eliza died 8 March 1870
in Vigo Co.,IN. Then James married #2, my gggrandmother who was Margaret Ann
McDonald (Born 7 Aug 1851) They married 21 Dec. 1870. They had nine
children. Do you want the names?
I can Email them if you want them. And the letter, I will find it and
scan it for you in the next couple of days, if you can let me know your EMail
address.
James died 5 July 1918 also in Vigo Co., IN. He is buried in Shepard
Cemetery in Vigo Co., IN. His daughter, my ggrandmother, moved to Monroe
Co., Michigan and lived next door to us when I was a small child. Many years
ago. I am assuming that she was named after his mother. She was Mary Belle
Newton Linder Armstrong and died in 1954.
If you want any more info from me, just let me know.
