Gregg,

Have you ever run into any documentation stating that Thomas Newton married Johan Eyon instead of Mary Laycock? I just found some info stating this and wondered if you had already researched it. I know just from looking at it that the dates, places and names work out, but in this line you can't take anything for granted.

Dear List:

It is good to see some activity here.

Judy:

Of course some went to NC....this is my line :)
Thomas Newton> John Newton> Benjamin Newton> Mary Newton> Mary Rogers>
Elizabeth Colclough (who I understand died in NC)> etc.> me.
I don't know if any of the descendants were named NEWTON, but my guess is
that there were some.

Russell:

Could you please clarify your quote?
You say, "(whose mother was Elizabeth Laycock)" about John Newton, the
oldest son.

Is that the case? I have pretty much the same quote, but it says that "the
widow Laycock" was the 3rd wife, and therefore the mother of the third son,
Benjamin Newton. My understanding was that: Joan (1st wife), was the mother
of John Newton; "Wife 'B'" (2nd wife), was the mother of Joseph Newton;
"(Widow) Laycocke" (3rd wife), was the mother of Benjamin Newton; & Rose
(maiden name unknown) Tucker Gerrard (4th wife), was the mother of Gerrard
Newton, Thomas Newton, and Elizabeth Newton.

Can you please check that quote, and if you cite it correctly, then could I
get the source citation used by Morel? Is she quoting the lawsuit directly,
or a transcription thereof? Since this is my line, I want to make sure that
I am searching for the right wife :)

General:

I see Joan Barr listed as the first wife. I have never seen any proof of
that. I think she is being confused with a Joan Barr that married a Newton
hundreds of years earlier. I have supposed that this is the Barr from whence
the "Newtons of Barr's Court" derive. And I will argue that this is not the
same family. Plus, I would say that there is no evidence the previous Joan
was a Barr either. There were Joans - there were Lady Barre's descendants,
but no Joan Barr married to a Newton that I can tell. Please inform me if I
am in error here.

So also, I think I have never seen the name Laycocke either. I think
Elizabeth as the name of the wife is accurate, but as close as I can get is
that one of the Newton Family had business dealings with Joseph Laycocke.
That is surely not good reason to assign a wife a maiden name.

And on Rose, she must have 50 maiden names by now. And I still wonder if she
might not also have been married to a Shepard.

Royal Newtons:

If you are looking for a Royal line on Newton, you need go no further than
the wife of an earlier John Newton (i.e., Margaret Poyntz), who was Royal
probably 1,000 ways. the problem is getting there through Thomas Newton of
Hull. I know the descent shown in the LDS ancestral file, and believe it is
unbearably weak. For each person listed as a file submitter on parts of the
pedigree both prior to and after the marriage of John Newton and Margaret
Poyntz, I wrote a snail-mail letter trying to find the documents they used
to make those links. I got no response from any of them except that one
moved and the forwarding order had expired, which MUST mean that that is the
person who has all the records, because evidently the others didn't.

I understand Sir John Newton and Margaret (Poyntz) Newton to have had these
children:
1. Grace Newton, who m. Sampson Norton;
2. Elenor Newton, who m. John Elyott;
3. Jane Newton, who m. ___ Cartwright and also m. ___ FitzJames (order
unknown to me);
4. Bridgit, who m. Richard Hannam;
5. Theodosia, who m. Thomas Manners;
6. Theophila, who m. William Boteler;
7. Margaret Newton, who m. Thomas Southwill and also m. Lord Paget (order
unknown to me);
8. Henry Newton, who m. Catherine, daughter of Thomas Paston;
9. John Newton, "Of Frusto" (or "of Bristowe");
10. Thomas Newton;
11. Sampson Newton;
12. Anthomy Newton;
13. Francis Newton, Dean of Winton;
14. Nazareth Newton;
15. Frances Newton;
16-19. Another 4 daughters

So if you are counting at home, dat's a bunch o' young'ns.

But more to the point, that is a lot of sons that our Thomas Newton of Hull
could have come from. But that isn't what the ancestral file says. The
ancestral file says it was Henry in particular.

My understanding is that Henry Newton and Catherine (Paston) Newton had the
following children:
1. Theodore Newton, who married Penelope Rodney;
2. Elizabeth Newton, who married John Judcot;
3. Frances Newton, who m. Gyles Strangeways;
4. Margaret Newton;
5. Ann Newton

If there was a son John, he sure didn't get much press, as I can not even
see that he existed. I do not observe his presence in any of the
Visitations, unless I missed one. I would like very much if someone could
point out to me the one I missed. I think I have seen maybe a trace of a
John, but certainly no marriage, and _certainly_ nothing to show that he was
the father of Thomas Newton of Hull.

I think it is possible that Thomas Newton of Hull was the son of John Newton
and Catherine Paston, but I do not believe this could be the same John as a
son of Henry Newton and Catherine Paston. Just the idea of marrying someone
with the exact same maiden name as the mother should make one wonder. The
Newton line may be Royal, but I don't see how it can be what is shown in the
LDS ancestral file.

Okay, message is too long to proofread - I hope I didn't botch it.

Cheers,

Gregg
