1987 "RIVER LORDS Father and Son"

p56..."Sidney SMITH of the "HMS DRAKE".....took an interest in the
Newfoundland breed of dogs. Before 1770 it was known as 'the
Bear dog' and kept by John [PEYTON] as a work dog. Horses had
not yet been introduced to parts of Notre Dame Bay so the
Newfoundland dog then took their place, hauling firewood, dried
codfish and shipbuilding materials."
