1542-1585-1588-1612-1620....FRANCIS RUSSELL DRAKE at St. John's,
Newfoundland

Excerpts from the 1995-1997 book by ARTHUR M. SULLIVAN titled "No
Strangers Here"
p24-25
"JACQUES CARTIER, the famous FRENCH explorer, visited St. John's
many times. It was there that he met Sieur ROBERVAL in the early
summer of 1542 when the latter tried to compel the BRETON captain
to return with him up the St. LAWRENCE River. CARTIER eluded his
superior by slipping out of the harbour at night and sailing back
to France. Sir FRANCIS DRAKE made St. John's his headquarters in
1585, when he was sent out on a mission from the British
Admiralty; he captured many Spanish and Portuguese ships and
brought their crews home as prisoners. This was an attempt to
cripple the Armada which three years later launched an invasion of
England."

Question: Since this is only the second published historical
record that I have seen which connects FRANCIS RUSSELL DRAKE to
Newfoundland history, I am wondering if any lister can tell me the
historical source record which may have produced Mr. SULLIVAN's
1995 comment. I look forward to hearing from you.
F. W. ROWE, in his "History of Newfoundland" credited Capt.
BERNARD DRAKE for his successful efforts against the Spanish
pirates.
