1920-1997, William(Billy)1913-?, James(Jim) 1923-1977), John(Jack)
1912-1964), Mary Ellen (Nellie) 1918- , Rose 1905- , Blanche 1904- ? ,
Mary Ellen(MInnie) 1908-1992. Most lived in Badger for the
majority of their lives except one lived in Whitless Bay and Grandfalls.
Ellen was known as a tough and rough woman. She was big and tall with very
dark skin and hair. She liked to get her own way and had a very bad temper.
If someone made her mad whether a man or woman, there was a possibility
that she would lay them flat with her fist. One day, she was mad because
one of her children forgot to pick up a large barrel of flour from the
train station in Badger. Instead of saying anything, she marched down to
Badger and carried it up herself on her shoulders, plunked it down in the
middle of the floor and put her fist through the middle which is how you
opened it. When the flour cleared the air, there was no one now standing
around the kitchen. They had all made a quick exit and Grandmother's
kitchen was rarely empty. She had a sort of cook house of her porch. There
were many mouths fed on that street for Sunday dinners. All you had to do
was show up. She was a tough but a good woman too who looked after her
family well. Walter was one of her favorites and she ordered an accordian
from Eatons catalogue for him.. Dad played the accordian with zest all his
life. His father (not to be outdone) ordered a set of boxing gloves for
him. Dad was the champion boxer in Badger and he taught me to give a nice
upper right cut too. Dad was extremely handsome and got lots of attention.
Some people told him he looked like a movie star when he was young. (Clint
Eastwood's chin, I think) He stood out in a family of contrasts with some
being short and sturdy, dark skinned and also a lot of indian features,
whereas a lot of them were tall large or slim. Rumor has it that
Grandmother was Micmac but no proof yet. There was a large fire in Little
Bay St. Patricks way back in the early 1900's and as with a lot of things,
papers got burned too.
