Hi All,
My greatest challenge - biggest stone wall - has been in tracing the
origins of Cornelius CALLAHAN, father of Pricilla [1822 - 1903], of New
Perlican. Throughout my quest I've found some wonderful Websites and
Interesting Tidbits on Irish Ancestral Research. Even if the dedicated
CALLAHAN Sites have great links to the Auld Sod. The Luck of the Irish to
you . .

Have you found the "Eoghanacht Genealogies from The Book
of Munster" at
<http://www.finearts.sfasu.edu/uasal/eoghan.html>?
This, along with "The Milesian Legends" at
<http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/legends.htm>,
allows for a whimsical tracing of Irish Surnames back to Adam. Just
fun stuff.

Matheson Distribution of CALLAGHAN and variants:
As CALLAGHAN is among the 100 most common surnames in
Ireland, the Matheson distribution data may not be as helpful
as it is with the more elusive names - but here it is:

The O'Callaghans, lords of Clonmeen, were in their times very powerful
chiefs and had their principal residence at the Castle of Clonmeen, the
ruins of which still remain on a rock near the River Black Water, County
Cork. The O'Callaghans originate from County Cork, Ireland and are a branch
of the original MacCarthy line, a high king of Munster (SW Ireland).
The O'Callaghans are descended from the 10th century King of Munster called
Ceallachain. Their original territory was in the barony of Kinelea in Co.
Cork, but they were driven out by the Anglo-Norman invaders and relocated
near Mallow in the northern part of the county. Under the Cromwellian
regime the leading family of the Sept was once again dispossessed, and this
time they re-settled in east Clare. The village of O'Callaghan's Mills
there is named after them. As was usually the case, the smaller branches
of the family were not transplanted and for this reason most of the 13,000
or so O'Callaghans in Ireland today are still to be found in County Cork.
The Chief of the Name, Don Juan O'Callaghan, born 1903, now resides in
Spain. [at the time of publication]
