Hi Folk's;

I might try and explain what's happening, most all on this list are
aware we at the "Grand Banks" were donated space at Wordplay, this was
for two reasons. First we are getting more material and require the
space, second we've had experienced a problem at INFOnet, with what they
term "bandwidth". This is caused by the amount of traffic coming to the
server, heightened by the fact NFGenWeb links to our data, both severs
explained that the links directly to the data, is similar to what
happens when you get "spammed" with e-mail, it overloads the system,
they also fell it unethical as it was donated space and feel they should
be getting the credit for hosting it not NFGenWeb.. They are both
developing a system to block this and should have it in place by the New
Year. This is unfortunate since once that's in place NFGenWeb will not
even be able to link to our main index pages.
So until the systems can be put in place we must relocate our files from
one server to another in order to reduce the "bandwidth". Failure on our
part to do this could result in a complete system failure at INFOnet.
This also affects the search ability as we only can re-index the
Webinator once a month, rather than the intended weekly reindexing. We
will have another search engine in place at Wordplay, but this will mean
making two separate searches. Over the past few weeks we have relocated
or renamed about 700 - 1000 files, so I only assume that it's taking
time for the NFGenWeb to catch up on changing the links, therefore your
getting 404 errors at that site.
The unfortunate part for you is that once they are caught up, we'll be
forced to do it all over and that's the unfortunate part for us.
We are not saying you shouldn't use the NFGenWeb site, simply that if
you're looking for data that's on Newfoundland's Grand Banks, use either
of the addresses in my sig file below, this will help all concerned. I
hadn't wanted to go public with this, but I fell it necessary at this
time. People are trying to gain access to the files at the "Grand Banks"
from NFGenWeb and e-mailing me to ask "why am I getting a 404 error". I
don't control what's put up on NFGenWeb nor do I know, so I feel it
important that people distinguish between the two sites and if a problem
arises at either Wordplay or INFOnet, I'll attempt to fix it. If your
experiancing problems accessing files from NFGenWeb, please contact the
appropriate person at that site.
Thanks for you understanding in this matter.
Cheers :-)
