Subject: [NFLD-LAB] Re: Dingle Peninsula Laborers in Fisheries
Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 10:36:58 EST

Hello,

I'm new to this list, and am seeking suggestions re sources of
information on Irish temporary laborers in the NewFoundland fisheries in the
period 1800-1840. I understand from Irish sources that men from the western
Dingle peninsula ( Co. Kerry), specifically from Dunquin civil parish, were
recruited for periods of 4-5 years after which they reportedly returned to
the Dingle peninsula to marry and farm. My research interests in Dunquin
parish include MORIARTY, LEAHY, O'BRIEN and MALONE surnames among others. In
the late 18th century many Dunquin families were dependent on flax production
as source of income, and were hard hit by changes in British taxation and
export policies in 1812-1815 period. Presume that many of these former
flax-producing families may have sent sons off to Newfoundland fisheries ,
and would like to obtain more information. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Regards, Karen
