Hi Wayne,
My mother's maiden name is White. I have been researching the family tree for
about a yr. now. I have talked to a few people researching the Whites. I
believe they were a 'hard bunch', however, the history just in NFLD goes back
a long way. Unfortunately I have only got back to 1808 yet.
It is believed Whites are Norse and may have Been drifting around since the
Vikings. There have even marriages with Native Indians from way back. My
hometown McIver's is a Viking name. It means son of Ivar. In the early 1800s
Whites were living in the community.
There is also Whites/Wights from England and LeBlanc/Whites from France. Oh
the mangle.
If your tree traces back to England then chances are if you go far enough
back you will get to the Norse and it is possible they did switch.
It's not uncommon in NFLD, way back in 17 and 1800s that people change their
name. At one time there was a graduation process in place for
Newfoundlanders. If you were "bad" you were sent back to where you came from,
unless you changed your name and moved to a different part of the Island.
I would love to hear some input on this little thought.
Darrin
