EAVIS

CHARLES WILLIAM EAVIS, a native of Portsmouth, England, began his career as a midshipman in the Royal Navy. Sometime in the 1830's he jumped ship in St. John's and made his way up the south coast to White Bear Bay. For a number of years he, with many of his fellow baymen, prosecuted the fishery at Ramea during the summer months. Then, following the example of many others in the area, he decided to settle on the island permanently. It is quite probable that he had married while living in the Bay.
