JANES (JEYNES)
THOMAS JANES and his brother DAVID settled in Ramea sometime in the 1830's.
They had probably lived in White Bear Bay for a few years and fished in
Ramea during the summer months before deciding to remain on the island
permanently. THOMAS or TOMMY, as he was generally called, was a very
versatile man - fisherman, carpenter, boat-builder and merchant. In
addition, he baptized babies, witnessed marriages, and actively participated
in other community affairs. During the winter of 1843-44 he built a small
schooner in White Bear Bay. Shortly afterwards he purchased two more
schooners and used all three vessels in prosecuting the cod and herring
fisheries. They were also used to carry the processed fish to market in St.
Pierre and St. John's and to bring back trade goods for the business which
he started in the early 1840's. By 1870, however, the herring fishery had
drastically declined and THOMAS had sold the last of his schooners. After
his death in 1873 the business was closed and in 1874 the premises were sold
to the founders of John Penny & Sons.
