Hello, I was wondering if anyone has made a study of Quakers who came to
Nfld. perhaps from the American Colonies? There is a Thomas Gillett Quaker
who came over on the ship "Welcome" in 1682, There is also a reference to a
Richard Waterman who converted and escaped hanging in Mass., moved on to
Rhode Island. There is a Richard Waterman who is the 'Justice' at a
marriage in the USA, could this possibly the Richard Waterman who is the JP
for Trinity in 1730? Other Quaker surnames for Bay de Verde and Trinity are
Poole merchants White, Travener (sp.?) , Vallis. Jeffrey. Mifflen amd
Colbourne. Trinity Glletts m. into Quaker surnames for Bonavista and
Trinity, such as Skeffiington (George), and Bayley. In St. John's was a
Quacker named 'Mary Fisher' who m. William Bayley, Baptist/Quaker convert,
William was a merchant from Poole. In the Hampshire records for Quaker
marriages, circa 1600s are surnames related to Nfld. such as Pike, Curtis,
Bayley, Tuffin, Parsons, Randell, Alyes and Brown. Apparently the first
Quakers in Canada came from the American Colonies in the late 18th century
and settled in the Maritimes and Ontario. If anyone has looked into the
possible Nfld. Quaker connection I would appeciate hearing from you.
Sincerely, Bess
