My gg-grandmother was Maria(h) Whiffen of John Whiffen (supposedly of
England, b 1807) and Anne Foley, b 1810. Mariah was born in Argentia, so
read on and make your own conclusions. I'd be interested to make a
Whiffen conncetion with you.

According to the records of the Canadian Permanent Committee on
Geographical Names (http://GeoNames.NRCan.gc.ca/english/cgndb.html) you
will find one of the two Whiffens Cove sites not far off the Trans
Canada Highway. It's 6 km from Arnolds Cove and 4 km from Jacks Pond
Provincial Park. You won't have any trouble finding those two places on
a current map. That would put you close to 2 hours from St. John's.

More accurately, go to

Whiffens Cove
Province/Territory : Newfoundland
Feature type : Bay
Location : Placentia
Latitude - Longitude : 47° 42' 55" N - 53° 58' 05" W
NTS Map : 001N12

The other place is closer to Argentia, which was called Little Placentia
100 years ago. That's on the east side of Placentia Bay. Argentia is
where one of the 2 ferries from "Canada" lands. Of all the place names
listed within a 20 km radius, the other ones I recognize from digging
through the records are Fair Haven, Ship Harbour, Fox Harbour, Harbour
Buffett and Iona, which is the closest at 5 km.

Let me know if you think we could be related.
