Sandy Rossiter has real knowledge of PANL over time -- and I do not. But I
do take exception to a generalisation he made characterizing the alleged
deterioration in Staff performance at PANL as "that union mentality"...Which
particular "union mentality" do you single out? I am afraid you are talking
about millions of workers around the world and their elected representatives
and tarring them all with this very wide brush. This is a political
characterisation that is not fair!
As a descendent of fisherman families in Conception Bay who were for
generations enslaved to the Merchant's "anti-union mentality" I wanted to
register my regret at this remark.

Just a few comments on PANL and the List
re PANL
I have been researching at the place for 17 years so I have a bit of
knowledge on the place.
For the first couple of years there was a Christine (or Frances) Ryan
working there. She was the most wonderfully helpful person you could ever
find and she always went out of her way to help you. In the 1990's there
was a radical change in the help there. I almost hated to go there. They all
seemed to have that union mentality and that (real) research help was not a
part of their job.
Another annoying aspect of PANL is that they are supposed to close at 4:30
but they warn you at 4 that there will be not further retrievals and by 4:15
you have to be OUT. They are quite dictatorial about that.
There has been a staff change in the last 2-3 years and right now the place
in not that bad but I would question the remark by a fellow lister who said
the staff was overworked. They all seem to experience a considerable amount
of "dead time" when no one is requesting documents. It would be great if
they had serious researchers working at that desk (as I think Ms Ryan was)
each having a geographical area of expertise when it comes to genealogy.
I think that should be a requirement of anyone that gets hired on there.
The place is hot in the summer but it is such a beautiful building I don't
think anyone really minds. Just make sure you are in a pair of shorts and
t-shirt when you go there. The place is open through lunch which is a bonus
for those of us who have to travel to the island and time is so short..
Re: the list
I think variety is the spice of life and if it weren't for the shenanigans
of some of the listers (ie Matt!!) I think this list would very boring. Of
course, Sue has to keeps tabs on it so that things don't get out of hand.
Happy researching
Alexander Thomas Rossiter
