I have done research at PANL on a few occasions each summer for several years and have found the staff to be unfailingly helpful. As for closing time, it seems to me that people who are paid to work to 4:30 shouldn't be working until 5:00 because I can't get my act together to be out on time. They wouldn't get paid for the extra half hour, and there are few people in this country who would be willing to give up 2 1/2 hr per week x 52 weeks = 130 hr of unpaid labour per year - and indeed the law says an employer can't
require an employee to work overtime without being paid.
Last summer I spent a couple of days at the Library of Congress and NARA in Washington, DC. They had pretty clear rules about opening and closing (and use of materials and security!!!) - which they enforced to the letter. They were also extremely helpful and courteous in every way.
I've been very thankful for the help I've gotten at PANL and have no complaints. But consideration has to work both ways and I think staff are appreciative of the courtesy extented to them by researchers who hand back their material so everyone can be out on time.
