Bell Island Submarine Miner – February 1956
The Bell Island Branch of Red Cross held meetings in Lance Cove early this month for the purpose of organizing the women of that area for Red Cross activities on Bell Island. It is the intention of the local branch told Home Nursing classes there too.
The Bell Island All-Star hockey 1955 champions of Newfoundland in the “B” division are getting in readiness to defend the championship. Neill AMADIO, player with the Grand Falls Section “A” team last winter, is doing the coaching job here this season. Neill has plenty to do apart from coaching the seniors, he has about 300 Pee Wee Leaguers to look after………..The Buchans Miners Section “A” hockey team visited here this month for an exhibition meet with the local section “B” champions. The visiting miners outscored Bell Island nine goals to five. The game was low in penalties and proved an exciting one for spectators all through, with both teams playing fast, brilliant hockey.

Hugh CONNORS, Accounting Department, who was on the sick list in January, is not back on the job and feeling fine
Clifford CNTWELL, Personnel Office, was on the sick list is back on the job and feeling better
Patrick LAHEY, who received treatment at St. Clare’s Hospital in January has returned home and is feeling better
Harry WHALEN is home from hospital and improving
Walter BUTLER returned to the General Hospital in January to receive treatment for a leg injury received in a non-plant accident last summer
Pensioner Jim JONES entered the General Hospital for treatment in January. He ha returned home and is feeling better
Isaac SLADE is reported to be well on the road to recovery from injuries received I an underground accident in January.
Jerry FORD underwent an operation in hospital at St. John’s in January, he is reported to be feeling fine
Corbett PITTS who received treatment in the Grace Hospital recently is back on the job and feeling better
Willis ROSE has been on the sick list during the past few weeks
Lou ROSE has also been off the job during the past two weeks, receiving treatment for an old injury
Henry KING has not returned to work yet

Miss Patricia CULL recently resigned her position with the Company. She came here a little over a year ago to take the position as Secretary to the General Manager.
Miss CULL made many friends since coming here and was a very popular member of the Staff at Dominion Wabana Ore Limited.
On February 15th she was presented with a gift of silverware, by her female co-workers, at the office.

The Conception Bay North hockey team visited here on February 20th and 21st to meet the Bell Island All-Stars 1955 Champions in the Senior “B” Division, in the quarter semi-finals of the 1956 All-Newfoundland Championship playdowns. The games were played at the Bell Island Arena. In the opening game of the series, the Bell Island team turned back the visitors by a 15-7 score. In the second game which took place on Feb 21st, the Bell Island team walked off with that game outscoring the visitors by 23 to 3. The next game in the playdown will be at the Bell Island Arena on Friday night, February 24th between Bell Island All-Stars and the St. John’s Section “B”. A second game will be played in the Stadium at St. John’s on Saturday, February 25th. If a third game is necessary in the best of three series, it will be played on Bell Island. The winners to meet the papertown team from Grand Falls for the Senior “B” Championship.
Sympathy is extended to the relatives of Mrs. Alice DWYER who passed away at her home, Lance Cove, Bell Island on February 4th, in her 85th year.
Sympathy also to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth BARRETT, on the death of their infant son recently.
Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives of the following employees who died recently:
William NOSEWORTHY, who passed away at his home, Bell Island on Feb 19th, in his 58 year, following a short illness. Previous to his death he was employed with the Assay Department
Pensioner Ambrose DRIVER, who passed away at his home, Spaniard’s Bay on Jan 22nd in his 69th year.
