from page 77 of the '1794 Journal of Aaron THOMAS'
"CAPELIN Bay is more properly a Harbour, being a mile and a half
in length and not more than a quarter of a mile across in any
part. Its mouth is defended from the Sea by two very small
Islands called STONE and GOOSE Islands, there is deep water and a
very good Anchoring Ground. It is esteem'd a safe Harbour. In
this Bay is a little inlet called Brewing Cove, so call'd because
Men of War, who come to anchor in this Bay, brew their Spruce Beer
in this Cove. Here is a small Hutt erected to shelter the men
from the rain. The Rocks are very romantic, at a distance from
the Hutt is a Cascade. The Spruce Beer, when brew'd, is laid on
the ground in Casks to work. The Ship's Boats then take it on
Board for use. I have made use of my Pencil to represent a scene
to you, in viewing of which I had much satisfaction. [ author
note: This is missing].
About a mile from CAPELIN Bay is FERRYLAND where there is a
considerable Settlement. Near two hundred Houses and Hutts
constitutes this place.
