Several years ago I asked Cal Best at the Archives in St John's about voting . I still have his response:
In 1887 there was a new Election Act,which set the qualifications for candidates to the House of Assembly. Candidates had to have had a set income of $480 or be in possession of real property exceeding $2,400.00 in value. The person had to have been a resident of NFLD. for 2 years, be a male British Subject, 21 years of age or older, of sound understanding who held no criminal record. The same qualifications[except the monetary ones] applied to voters, and in addition they could not have received welfare from the public funds during the year immediately preceeding the election. In 1925 all, women 25 years of age or older were given the right to vote.
Women had to be 25, now isn't that interesting. How come men only had to be 21????
