Obituary. Gilbert Bugden.
The many friends of Gilbert Bugden learned with regret of his
death, Dec. 19 at the age of 82 years.
Gilbert Bugden was born at English Harbor, Trinity Bay, son of
the late Martin and Arianna Bugden. The deceased spent all his life at
English Harbor and will be remembered as a kindly man with a helping hand.
Gilbert Bugden was a community-minded, church-minded man and
his years of service to the church and the community have proven that he was
always willing to take up the cross and follow his Master.
For 56 years he served as lay-reader in the Church at English
Harbor; he was recording secretary of the English Harbor United Church (now
Summerville charge) for 38 years; secretary of the English Harbor
congregation for 27 years; superintendent of the Sunday School English
Harbor for 32 years; he was justice of the peace for 36 years in this area.
He also played an active part in the fishery program in his area.
Mr. Bugden always held the confidence and respect of the people
with whom he was associated. In the person of the deceased his many friends
found friendship and brotherly love measured by reality, not by pretention.
A former president of the Newfoundland Conference, United
Church of Canada, payed tribute to the deceased by saying, "He was a loving
husband and father, a true friend, a dedicated christian and loyal
churchman."
Mr. Bugden's days were made happy through his service in the
community and his association with people, and during his last days
relatives and friends did all in their power to soothe his suffering, and
prepare him for the passage, to that undiscovered country from whose bourne
no traveler returns.
Cards of sympathy, telegrams, letters and wreaths which poured
into home from all over Newfoundland, the Canadian mainland and the U.S.
show the esteem in which he was held.
Mr. Bugden is survived by his wife Emily at English Harbor; one
daughter, Joyce, Mrs. Jonathan Bursey in the U.S.; four grandchildren; a
son, Rev. Wilson Bugden predeceased him in Oct. 1962, and another son Arthur
paid the supreme sacrifice during the Second World War; a brother, Rev. W.B.
Bugden predeceased him some years ago.
Funeral service took place from his residence at English Harbor
to the United Church with interment at the family plot. The services were
conducted by the minister, W. George Stratton.
