Hello Cindy and Listers, I just finished reading a book titled
"Rogues and Heroes" by Paul Butler and Maura Hanrahan. It was
published in 2005 by Flanker Press, St. John's. There are 26
chapters in the book, each chapter telling the story of a person
of interest in Newfoundland history. The chapter about Nurse
(Myra) Bennett tells how she saved the leg and possibly the
life of her brother-in-law Alex. This is quoted from the book:
"In her view, her greatest medical achievement came only five
years after she first moved to the island. It happened when her
brother-in-law Alex slipped and fell into the teeth of a lumber
saw and almost severed his foot -- it was attached only by a
thin strip of flesh. Bennett cleaned the wound to the best of
her ability, and then stitched Alex's foot back onto his leg.
Then she and Angus bundled up Alex for the two-day trip to the
doctor in Bonne Bay. According to the doctor, she had done such
a good job that amputation was not necessary, and Alex was able
to keep his foot". (The book states also that she delivered
over 500 babies and extracted over 3,000 teeth!)
Nurse Bennett came to Newfoundland from England in 1921, so
this would have been around 1926. It doesn't say so in the
book, but the trip to Bonne Bay would probably have been by dog
team.
Cindy, you would have probably heard this story about your
great-uncle Alex.
Best wishes --Leona
