Indiana Historical Society to Host Fall Workshops

Learn the techniques used for reading and interpreting handwriting
styles used from the 16th to 19th centuries and learn how to tell a
story and build character for an otherwise elusive ancestor when the
Indiana Historical Society hosts genealogy research workshops at the
Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio Street, this fall.

* Paleography: Historical Script Workshop

Saturday, September 11, 2004, 10 a.m. to Noon: learn the techniques
used for reading and interpreting handwriting styles used in written
records in English and/or other European-language documents from the
16th to 19th centuries from Betty L. Warren.

Additionally, Warren will explore the three basic styles of Old World
handwriting and discuss factors to consider when trying to read old
documents, including personal style, spelling, punctuation,
abbreviations, foreign languages, writing surfaces and utensils.

Warren has presented genealogy programs since 1989 and is a volunteer at
the Johnson County Museum of History's genealogy department. She has
been president of the Indiana Genealogical Society since 2001 and has
earned professional certification as a genealogist from Brigham Young
University.

census records to city directories and advances to church records, court
records and newspapers. Family notes are examined, questioned and
incorporated into the research. The final steps of the search include
locating pertinent Web sites on the Internet to further your search,
contacting archives for information that will complete a successful

Family History CD Update Provides Import Capabilities for Roots Magic
and PAF Files

The Jefferson Project has announced that Family History CD now has the
ability to import pictures, audio, and video files directly and
automatically from PAF and Roots Magic software as well as the
previously announced Legacy Family Tree. This new feature allows you to
choose from many options to import just the items you want and
eliminates the need to re-type titles, descriptions, or dates!

Pages 42 -50 of the newly updated manual describe how to use the new
import options. Also included are instructions for putting your whole
genealogy file on CD for distribution.

The Family History CD automatically adds GenViewer Lite to any project
in which you have a .PAF, .FDB (Legacy), or GEDCOM file in the "Other"
category. This allows you to put your whole pedigree onto the CD as well
as your multi-media files. For more information about this feature, see
"Learn More/Features/Genealogy File Viewer" at
http://www.familyhistorycd.com/software/Features.php

GenViewer Lite can read and will be distributed on CDs with the
following types of files: GEDCOM, PAF 3- 5, TMG 4 (The Master
Genealogist), Family Tree Maker, and Legacy 3-5 files.

To learn more about Family History CD, visit the Web site at
http://www.familyhistorycd.com

To download the free update, go to
http://www.familyhistorycd.com/software/Upgrade.php

Note: The download at the above link includes the new version of the
manual and is approximately 10 MB. If you choose "open" when the options
are displayed, the installation will begin automatically.

To download or view just the manual, go to

Press Release: Family Chronicle Plans to Publish a Book of Family
Letters

"Family Chronicle" is in the early stages of planning a new book and we
need your assistance. The book, tentatively titled "Letters Home: The
Immigrant Experience" will be about the trials and tribulations of our
ancestors as recorded through their correspondence to friends and
family. The book will feature the transcribed letters from new
immigrants describing their experiences crossing the Atlantic or
migrating across North America, finding their first jobs in their
adopted country, moving into a new house and making a new life.

We are looking to your readers to share their family's letters
with us for publication in the book. Translated letters are welcome,
however, we are only accepting letters that predate 1950. Please send
your transcribed letters (as a MS Word document or as a RTF file) to
or a typed transcription to either of
the addresses on page five. Please ask your readers to include their
names, addresses and telephone numbers. A color photocopy of the
original document would be appreciated. Please do not send originals, as
we cannot return them. Phone numbers, e-mail addresses and mailing
addresses supplied will only be used in connection with this project and
will not be included in the book.

We would like to illustrate the book with photographs, so if readers
have photographs of the writer, the recipient or one of the subjects in
their letter, please send a copy or scan of the original. The scans
should be at least 200 dpi in JPEG (preferred) or TIFF file format.
These can be sent via e-mail to or
mailed on a floppy disk or CD. If they wish to send photocopies please
use a color photocopier, even if the picture is black and white, as
color photocopies produce a far higher quality image. Please write a
suitable caption for all pictures sent, giving as much information as
possible for each.

If we use the letter we will send two copies of the book for
every letter published. If we do not use the letters, we send a discount
voucher one can use to purchase the book (we reserve the right to
restrict discount vouchers to serious submissions).

Grave of Revolutionary Soldier Recently Located
Marking Ceremony Planned

After decades of searching, researchers from the Standridge National
Family Historical Society have recently discovered the location of the
long lost grave of James Standridge, a private in the NC militia during
the American Revolutionary War. On Saturday September 25, 2004 hundreds
of his descendents and guests from across the nation will gather at the
site in a rural cemetery in Oconee County, SC to honor his
accomplishments and dedicate a monument to his memory.

Standridge was born in Maryland in 1755, almost exactly 250 years ago.
His family migrated to old Rowan County, NC some ten years later. Here,
during the Southern phase of the American Revolution, he served as a
militiaman on several expeditions against the Cherokees in eastern
Tennessee, as well as against the invading British Army. About 1780 he
married Mary Wallace and they became the parents of some eleven
children.

In 1793 the family moved to what is now Oconee County, SC and settled
west of Westminster in the Holly Springs Community. Here James died on
May 6, 1837. After his death most of his relatives moved into Georgia,
Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and other points to the west. The location
of his grave, as well as that of his wife, who died in 1849, has long
been lost to living memory.

For many years, beginning in the 1970s, a dedicated group his
descendents began a long and futile search for his unmarked final
resting place. Only after searching through a microfilmed copy of the
records of the Holly Springs Baptist Church, located near Standridge's
pioneer home, did family researchers find clues to his burial place.
These records, located on microfilm at Furman University in Greenville,
SC, reveled that Standridge was an active member of this congregation
shortly before his death. Therefore, it is now almost certain that the
remains of the veteran rest in the historic burying ground located
beside Holly Springs Church. This will be the site of the memorial
ceremony.

On the weekend of September 25, 2004, Greenville, SC will host the
Standridge National Family Historical Society's biannual family reunion.
A special part of this year's activities will be the military memorial
ceremony honoring this long overlooked American hero. This once in a
life time event will salute the life accomplishments of Private
Standridge, and commemorate his memory with music, ceremony, and prayer.
Its central feature will be an unusual military ritual conducted by Sons
of the American Revolution chapters from SC and Georgia. In attendance
will be a spectacular color guard in Revolutionary War uniforms. Modern
veterans will be there to fire the traditional twenty-one gun salute. A
fife and drum corps will provide period music. The ceremony will close
with the playing of a lone bagpiper.

The event will began promptly at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. Holly
Springs Baptist Church and Cemetery is located about 4 miles west of
Westminster, SC on Highway 76. For more information contact the
President of the Society, R. P. Baker, 6525 Magnolia Dr., Mabelvale, AR
72103. His email address is .
