Surnames: BATCHELDER, DALTON, COTTON, HUTCHINGS

Seeking the descendants of Stephen BATCHELDER; b. 19 Jan 1755 at
North Hampton, New Hampshire; son of James BATCHELDER and
Mehitable DALTON; m. Sarah COTTON, daughter of Thomas COTTON, at
New Hampton, New Hampshire; d. 6 Mar 1847 at Exeter, Maine, at
age 92.

He is listed in the Batchelder Genealogy [1898 : my Frederick
Clifton Pierce] as number 395, pp. 183-184. This publication has
been noted for containing many errors, but the following
partially substantiates and/or contradicts some of the facts
stated.

Stephen Batchelder resided in Eppingham (sic), New Hampshire and
Jonesboro, Maine (Batchelder Genealogy, pp. 183). I am convinced
Eppingham is a typo and should have been Effingham; also I can
not confirm that he was ever in Jonesboro, Maine.

I can not find any town in NH named Eppingham. Someone
arbitrarily changed Eppingham to Epping and placed five of the
children as born in Epping, NH (Ancestral File numbers 18KM-MS6,
-MQR, -MPK, -MRO, -MTD) which will certainly confound any
researcher using Ancestral File.

The U.S. Census schedules show Stephen living in Deerfield
(Rockingham county) (1790-1800) and Effingham (then Strafford,
now Caroll county) (1810), New Hampshire; and then Wellington,
Somerset county, Maine.

So it is probable that at least the first five children were
born in Deerfield, NH and not Epping.

Publishing Company, 1990), 1:107).

Children of Stephen Batchelder and Sarah Cotton were as follows.
Children i thru v listed in the Batchelder Genealogy, pp. 183-
184. Unknown presumed daughters vi and vii picked up from the
U.S. Census schedules.

i. Sarah BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census).

ii. John BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census).

iii. Cotton BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census).

iv. Mary BATCHELDER, probably born 1790-1800 (1800 census)

v. Stephen BATCHELDER; b. 6 Oct 1791 at North Hampton, New
Hampshire; m. Betsey HUTCHINGS 31 Oct 1819 at Wakefield, New
Hampshire. He is listed as number 950 in the Batchelder
Genealogy, p. 250. I have extracted his descendants from this
genealogy. My main interest lies in his siblings.

vi. Presumed unknown daughter BATCHELDER, probably born before
1790 (1790 census)

vii. Presumed unknown daughter BATCHELDER, probably born 1795-
1800 (1810 census)
