Dear Fellow Rooters:
A short while ago I came to the conclusion that the Berwicks at one
point became a Quaker safe haven. I found that at least some of the
Varneys, Roberts, Lords, etc., married into my family in one way or
another. The lack of church or public vital records made me somewhat
suspicious that my family might have lacked public approbation, despite
being landholders.
I mentioned my suspicions to a duane of living historians (who shall be
nameless here), who made the observation that the Berwick people would
likely take exception to my view that the Berwicks were a safe haven,
even though I had evidence that my relatives were disenfranchised "for
Entertaining Quakers".
Recently, I began to put it all together. The Hubbard family holdings
were on Beech Ridge Road, near where Roberts' Road intersects, and near
what is now probably called Lord's Meeting House, if it still exists.
Whether or not this meeting house was or is a Quaker Meeting House, I
don't know at present, but 'am in the process of finding out.
Abstracts of deed transfers, and estate inventories citing creditors and
debtors list many people who immediately surrounded this property, or
were shopkeepers. Some of their names, or surnames, coincide with the
list below. The information is properly attributed, as shown.
Quakers figured as property holders adjoining the Hubbard property, or
were debtors and creditors of Dominicus, or married Hubbards, except
that James HUSSEY sold his land to Benjamin Hubbard. A list of marriages
of Friends solemnized in North Berwick, as found in York County Marriage
Returns, NEHGR Vol 63, April 1909, p. 177 follows. The list includes the
family names of other women who married Hubbards.
Samuel Nichols and Dorcas BUFFUM m. 30th day of the 12th month 1790;
Cornelius Douglass and Lydia BUFFUM m. 23th of 6 month 1790;
James Robertson and Sarah Green m. 29th of 9th month 1791;

Daniel PLUMMER and Anna Morel [sic Morrell] m. 26th of 12th month 1793;

In addition, Simeon HUSSEY (not on the above list) m. Hannah Hubbard,

This info is being shared solely as background material for all of you.
I have no ax to grind here.
