Nancy,
According to "Strafford, NH, US census and town tax records, People,
Land, Livestock, Crops, 1790-1880," by Delmar W. Goodwin, Heritage Books, p.
132, 1850 census, and p. xxv (name index), Betsey b. ca 1792 md. Nat Hanson.
Three Hanson families lived on "New Road" and the Stephen Hill family lived
nearby, "top of Caverly Hill" at the time of the 1850 Census.
Nathaniel HANSON, 55 farmer
Betsy (HILL), 58
Joseph H. 29, farmer
Nancy H. 19
Plumer 22
Stephen M. sch 14

This book only covers the town of Strafford and Barrington (until part
of it became Strafford about 1820.)
There are many Hill families, and several "Johns." Your "John" died
before the names of spouses and children were included in the census
records, so I can't verify that the one you are seeking had a wife named
"Mary."
There are
John b. 1784, son of Eliphalet Sr (?)
John b. before 1760 upper Prov Rd (?)
John Jr. b. 1750's Dynamite Crn
John S. son/Henry
John son/William L
Jonathan b. ca 1750 Barndr Gap/Cavly Hill
Jonathan son/Stephen P

In the 1790 Census, there were 7 Hill families enumerated. The Jonathan
Hill and Samuel Hill families lived at Barndoor Gap. Henry Hill's family
was at "126 @ Mousam." John B. Hill lived on New Road. John, William, and
Joseph Hill lived with their respective families at "Canaan," either next
door to each other or in the same compound, I would guess.

Perhaps you already knew most of this!

If you have many family members living in Barrington/Strafford during
this time period, I highly recommend this book. You will use it regularly
as it is chock full of history, stories, road names and addresses, customs,
and the names of every family who lived in the town from 1790-1880. Goodwin
even tells stories about the census-takers and how thoroughly and carefully
(or carelessly) each one did his job. It is generally well-indexed, though
we have found a couple of family members (JOHNSONS) who were not in the
index.

If you have found other helpful books or sources, we would be glad to
know of them, as my husband's forebears were apparently among the first
families to settle there and we have hit a stone wall since they weren't
"landed gentry" or anything like that, with their ancestors already traced!
