Hi,
I happened to read your request for information on Dr. Sterne of Claremot, NH. I was interested because that's my home town. I did a lookup for you in a book I own. The title is "History of the Town of Claremont New Hampshire for a period of one hundred and thirty years from 1764 to 1894" by Otis F.R.Waite, published in 1895. How's that for a title?
There are several references in this book. It appears that Dr. Thomas Sterne was a promintent citizen of Claremont. Some of this may not agree with what you have; but that's for you to sort out. On page 184 it names several buildings and houses on Town Hill, which was the part of Claremont that was first settled it reads in part..."Next, on the west side of the highway, is the Dr. Thomas Sterne place. Dr. Sterne was the first physician settled in town. He came here from Boston in 1768, and soon built the house on this place, which was then the largest and most elegant one in this vicinity. He died there November 24, 1816..." .
This was located on what is now Route 12A, at what is now Jarvis Lane. It's about half way between West Claremont and Claremont Junction near the Connecticut River. On page 335 it reads...."Thomas Sterne, the first physician settled in town; here from 1768, living on Town hill, until his death, Nov. 21,1816."
You may have noticed a conflict on the day of his death. Page 310 lists him as a representative of the town to the New Hampshire legislature in 1778 and 1779.
Chapter XXI lists Marriages-Births-Deaths. On page 319 under births it reads..." To Doct. Thomas and Sarah Sterne, Daughter, Nabby, Dec. 23, 1771. Daughter, Fanny, April 13,1772. Son, Thomas, May 30, 1774. Daughter, Polly, May 5, 1779. Daughter, Eunice, July 8, 1781. Son, William, Feb. 1 1784. Daughter, Betsey, Jan. 2, 1786." On page 316 under marriages it reads..." Stephen Conant, of Windsor VT., and Fanny Sterne, of Claremont, June 1, 1795." These are all taken from the town records. These are the only births and marriages listed for this family. The records given only go up to 1801. It states that..." For many years succeeding 1801 no records were made of these events." On page 144 is an interesting piece..." The first organization in Claremont for debating, declamations, and other literary exercises, was formed February 2, 1791, and consisted of six members..." one of which was Thomas Sterne, Jr.
Well I hope I've been of some help in your quest. Good Luck and Good Hunting.
