Hi Syl,
Thanks for the information.
..........Have you tried to get a military history using his regiment
number and name?
It's on my list !
The records are at the PRO Kew, London, UK, and I either have to go there
personally, or get a researcher to do it for me.
Another idea might be to look for the death of his father, if you're lucky
and he died after civil registration of deaths.
Yes, good idea.
Do you know what religion he was?
No, but I assume a protestant, because I further assume my McMasters came
originally from S W Scotland (sometime after 1600) - this second assumption is
based on Y-DNA evidence of a 650 - 700 year ago common ancestor with a
McCracken. 'McCracken', according to Black's Surnames of Scotland, is a name only
associated with S W Scotland. There is a cluster of McMasters too in S W
Scotland.
I suppose that finding a direct line male McMaster living in the area now,
who was willing to do a DNA test, would be conclusive proof not only of my
biological connection, but also of my migration theory.
Since you have a
parish, you might be able to access church records which are sometimes
available for earlier than civil records (baptism, marriage death).
Someone has kindly sent me the address of the current Rector of Clonfeacle
Parish.
Thanks for the information.
Mike
