Hello Peter,

Leases were made out for "lives".

This was normally 3 lives, the life of the lease holder and 2 others. The
lease expired on the death of the last named person or "life"
For this reason we often find the youngest family members [grandchildren]
named as the other 2 lives as they would have been expected to have lived
the longest from the date of the lease being issued.

Other prefered members of the Royal family or other important people. I
suppose maybe they though that they had a better chance of survival and
longevity than the normal man!

regards
Robert
