Message Board Post:

Don,
I am living in Dublin for the year (on sabbatical) and am taking the opportunity here to actively research my husband's WILSON and ELLIS lines in County Armagh.

I have researched at the PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) in the Clare Presbyterian Church, Tandragee Presbyterian Church and Ballymore Church of Ireland (in Tandragee) records. I have also been to each of these cemeteries and extracted headstones. I am also extracting all WILSON and ELLIS surnames from the 1901 census (and actually finding several older persons who would have been in the area in the 1830-1850's. Also, I've looked through many other Irish records (tithe applotments, Griffiths Valuations, freeholders, etc.)

My husband's great-grandfather (James Thomas Wilson, b. 1828) left an autobiography which has been the starting point for us. His parents were Thomas Wilson (1788) and Jane Ellis (1800) (your Thomas' sister).

Parents of Thomas Wilson (1788):
Thomas Wilson (abt 1765, died 1788)
Catherine Jenkins (abt 1765, died 1829)

Parents of Jane Ellis: (your Thomas' sister)
William Ellis (abt 1766, died 1819)
Nancy Agnes Jones (abt 1773, died 1819)

When Thomas Wilson (1765) died in 1788, his young wife Catherine was pregnant with Thomas (1788). So Thomas (1788) never knew his father. [This is our line.] After 10 years, Catherine remarried (the autobiography doesn't say to whom). However, the autobiography does say that his mother had a daughter named Jane and that this Jane married an uncle on his mother's side (ELLIS). [this would be your line]. I have concluded, from multiple sources, that Jane ??? (b. abt 1800) did marry Thomas Ellis (abt 1795). However, I did not have her surname. Several mistakes have been made on the online databases (e.g. connecting this Thomas Ellis to Catherine Wilson -- the mother, and to Jane Wilson.) Also, Jane's last name would not be Wilson, but the name of her father (unknown).

HOWEVER, I did find this record:
Clare Presbyterian Church records (PRONI, microfilm MIC.IP/329, p. 28) gives name of James Ellis, parents Thomas Ellis and Jane Wade, baptised 28 Mar 1834. Residence: Clare

James matches the name of Thomas' child from the autobiography. (as does your Samuel, although I found no baptism record for Samuel). Therefore, my current thinking is that Jane's maiden name was actually WADE. This would also give us the surname of Catherine's second husband.

Samuel Ellis (1823) is shown as married to Margaret Robinson and as having three children baptized at the Clare Presbyterian Church: Elizabeth, Robert, Samuel.
Clare Presby. Church baptisms show a Samuel Ellis md to Margaret Robinson, children born 1857 to 1867 - Clare Presbyterian Church records (PRONI, microfilm MIC.IP/329,).
I hope this helps you make a connection more clear for your Samuel.

I would like to send you some family group sheets (in PDF files) for these families that gives my information, note and sources. Please email me directly at and I will be happy to send them. I can also send you the part of the autobiography that describes the ELLIS family.
Julie
