Robert IRWIN, born about 1814, most likely in Newtown, Limavady, Derry; his
wife Elizabeth nee GIVEN; and their children John; Samuel, born 1838
Newtown,
Limavady, Derry; George; Mary; Robert; born 1846 in Philadelphia, USA;
Elizabeth born 1849 in Philadelphia, USA; and Annie Jane.
This family spent several years in Philadelphia in the 1840 and at least
two, possibly more of their children were born there. They subsequently
returned to Ireland and then migrated to Australian March 1866.
Robert IRWIN (senior) was a farmer, mostly involved in growing grapes for
wine production. Two of his sons were subsequently involved in the same
industry after they came to Australia. His other two sons became newspaper
editors/proprietors.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? Robert IRWIN's parents were
John IRWIN and Mary RUSSELL; his wife Elizabeth GIVEN's parents were James
GIVEN and Jane MORNE.
I'm also researching Andrew BUCHANAN, who married Elizabeth IRWIN 7 weeks
after he arrived in Australia. Andrew was born in 1846 also from Limavady
and was a newspaper reporter. His parents were Andrew BUCHANAN (also a
newspaper editor) and his wife was Mary Jane THOMPSON. Three of their other
children also migrated - Rebecca, born 1841; William James, born 1851; and
Thompson Buchanan, birth date unknown.
Happy to trade information researching similar lines.
