Hi, I wish I had a surname book here to answer your question, but you will
find several at your local library and can read about the history of the
name, spelling variations and distribution in Ireland. Maybe the reference
librarian would be willing to provide you with that information over the
telephone, although it is great fun to go there in person - especially
to the genealogy library! You can post an addendum and tell me, as I have
Simmons in one of my lines!
There seems to be quite a few families in Co. Leitrim, which is another
county in the province of Connaught, as it Co. Mayo. It may be that the
name is English in origin. I know that it is also found in Germany.
