It matters what church he belonged to. Civil
records in Ireland started sometime in the 19th
century. Before that, there were church records -
sometimes. The Anglican (Church of Ireland),
Presbyterian, and probably Roman Catholic
churches kept good records. Some of the other
sects didn't.

Speaking of which, I need to check into
Presbyterian records for County Londonderry
between 1750 and 1797. Are those available from
the Mormons, or do I hvae to write to
Presbyterian Archives in Belfast? Would I have
to order about 200 reels (two for each year each
for marriage and birth) for that time period? In
which case, would I really be better off writing
to Presbyterian Archives? I'm looking for John
Smith and Isabella Smyth(e) both born about 1769,
probably married before 1790 and definitely
before 1797, and had an infant son born probably
shortly before they left for Pennsylvania, which
was probalby before 1790 and certainly before
1797. Isabella's parents were William Smyth(e)
and Elizabeth King, who may conceivably have
married close enough in time and space to
Isabella's birth to be able to locate their
marriage record. As you can see, only Elizabeth
King did not have a very common name. And I'm
not certain they were from Londonderry County,
just have relatives who are vaguely of that
impression. That's an unlikely vague impression
to hear twice from distant cousins of different
lines if it didn't happen.

How exactly are Presbyterian Archive's records
organized? Are they indexed at all, even by
county?

Yours,
Dora
