Joan,
Many families from Co. Derry and other northern counties came to work in the Dupont Powder Mills, with some also
from other counties. What's really interesting is how early there are Irish Catholics there. I'm not sure when St.
Mary's began, but as far as I know, the 19th century all the Roman Catholic Churches in Delaware have been
microfilmed. Should be available from any LDS Family History Center. There is a web page that has the availability
and film numbers; look for it in links from the Cyndi's List Delaware page. (This is up to the discretion of each
bishop, so some dioceses are filmed and some are not.)
I have consulted the films for St. Peter's (later the Cathedral) where the earliest parish registers begin, and
St. Joseph's-on-the-Brandywine, built in 1840 just for the Powder Workers. It is wonderful to be able to see these
records.
Sounds like you have already consulted the Hagley records.
My great-great-grandparents in early DE were Patrick CALLAHAN and Margaret McGLINCHEY.
How long did your family stay in Delaware?
