Mike,

Do you want to know exactly what the Tithe records for Ireland are? and
then whether the names you are looking for are in them....(another
question).

The Tithes are a record of who was leasing land at that time for each
county. The whole country was not recorded at the same time which is why
there is that time frame 1823-1838. All they list is the name of the person
who was leasing the land - and some bits of info on the land itself, no
family. If the person was involved in more than one plot of land then the
same name can turn up a few times. It's used as a census substitute because
we have no complete remaining census for Ireland for that time.

Before the recording of the Tithes was finished then the recording of the
Griffiths Land Valuation Record began and this is something the same except
there are differences in the size of the property you had to be leasing in
order to be listed in the records.

I can tell you a bit more about these records if you want.

Jane
