Typo - I should have said "if your ancestor tried to get a pension in the
early 1900s" - not 1800s!!

Lorraine,

I have the 1831 Londonderry census from the FHC, and will have it available
to me until April 15. Of the several films that cover the Londonderry 1831
census, the one I have borrowed does have Maghera in it. I have been doing
some lookups for people and would be glad to look for a few names for you if
you like.

I don't believe you will find any 1841 census data, unless you know
something I don't! There is only the 1841 for Co. Cavan that I am aware of.

You can go to http://pensear.org/main.html and through a search of pension
applications, you can sometimes get 1841 or 1851 census information. If your
ancestor tried to get a pension in the early 1800s when the Old Age Pension
Act was introduced, he had to prove his age based on being in the census
because there were no birth records to prove age. At the time of pension
applications (pre-1922), the census was available to search, so the data was
taken from it to prove the application. The web site makes more sense
explaining this than I do! So have a look there. (for Northern Ireland only)

Unfortunately, the 1831 census gives very little information - only the
following:

Parish
Townland
Name of head of household
# of males in the household
# of females in the household
Religion

As you see, there are no names other than head of household, and no ages
either.

If you think you can get anything out of finding someone, let me know the
names you'd like me to search for, and I'll see what I can do. At the moment
I have about 35 names already and I am not sure if I will be able to do them
all. (Any others who would like a lookup, please write to me directly and
I'll do my best. It helps if you know the parish - must be one of the
following: Arboe Artrea Ballinderry Ballynascreen Ballyscullion Derryloran
Desertlyn Desertmartin Kilcronaghan Killelagh Lissane Maghera Magherafelt
Tamlaght Termoneeny.)

Would someone have access to 1831 and 1841 Maghera, Londonderry censuses.
So far, I have for this family: Michael McKenna and Mary or Agnes Mulligan
and only son Hugh, born abt. 1827. Thank you.
Lorraine
