Subject: Origin of the surname BARNETT
Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 12:16:11 -0700 (PDT)
Hi,
My name is Donald Byars, and I live in Arizona, USA.
My grandmother was Maudie Barnett, and she told me that her father, George Barnett, was Irish, so I'm trying to locate the Irish origin of the surname BARNETT. I've noticed that many BARNETTs are listed on the LDS International Genealogical Index, ca. 1600s, living in the Northern Ireland area, and I'm wondering if this area could possibly be where my ancestors came from. I don't know anything about the BARNETTs in Ireland. I've also noticed that many BARNETTs are listed in England, so now I'm wondering if BARNETT is an Irish name, an English name, or both. My g-grandfather George Barnett had red hair and so do I, and everybody in my family has always told me that I got my temper and my red hair from my Irish g-grandfather George. I know that sounds like a cliche, but it's the truth. I'm not even sure if red hair comes from the Irish, since most of the Irish that I've seen and met were dark headed. Somebody told me that red hair actually comes from Scandinavia.
I hope somebody can help.
