Hello to Peter and others trying to trace "New Aussies" to Melbourne,
Victoria

I found a web site a couple of years ago, where there were complete
passenger lists into Melbourne 1852-1879. You will find your family without
a doubt and that's a start. Our HARRISONs were on the "Gypsy Bride" in
1860. They were from **ARMAGH** (note that, Y-IRL group!). PLEASE NOTE -
this family, like many others, went to the GOLDFIELDS of Ballarat and
Bendigo, where they tried to make their fortune for a few (4) years, and
then moved to Queensland.

Unfortunately, I don't have the actual name of the site because all that
printed on the page were the strings, so you will have to do a "google"
search* for Immigration to Victoria 1852-1879, Index to Inward Passenger
Lists, British and Foreign Ports. I know you can't search for that much at
one time, but it is what you are looking for.

*I think I went to PRO Victorian Archives first off, and moved around from
there.

I note you are with the ISP bigpond - ?Australia?. New South Wales also has
quite a good deal of data on-line, so that should cover your Sydney
enquiries to a degree.

Good luck
Bev

> Looking for descendants of John O'Connor, storekeeper of Newry
and Margaret McCartin circa 1830. They are my ggg grandparents.
>
> A son Charles Patrick (or Patrick Charles) O'Connor was born in
Newry on 8/11/1830. Names of other children are not known. Charles and
possibly other family members left Ireland during the Potato Famine.
>
> He is thought to be a sailor or rigger. He went to Liverpool,
England where he married Mary Byrnes of Carrick Macross, Monaghan in 1852.
They had two children before coming to Australia around 1855 and settling
first in Melbourne.
>
> It seems other brothers may have gone to USA, because Charles is
rumoured to have gone to fight beside them in the Civil War.
>
> After returning to Australia he moved to Sydney, where he started
a Soft Drink company around 1875. He died in 1896. He and Mary had eleven
children.
