Seeking fellow-researchers of the MARTIN family of Down.

Thomas MARTIN, son of Michael and ?Ellen, was born circa 1826 in Down.

Thomas married Mary Anne JOHNSON in Birkenhead on 10th Dec.1846. Tom's father, Michael, was recorded as "gentleman".

Thomas was a chemist, registered with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He lived and worked in the Brownlow Hill/Lime Street/Mount Pleasant area of Liverpool and was one of the few Catholics to become a member of the Select Vestry there. He was involved in local politics (Liberal) although not elected to the Town Council.

Thomas died of a stroke on 2nd March 1879. His obituary appeared in the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo.

It seems also that an obituary was placed in the Down Recorder, suggesting that some of Tom's family had remained in Down.

I don't know whether Thomas came to England with other members of his family, but his widowed mother, ?Ellen (born c. in County Down) was with Thomas's widow and children in Wavertree (Liverpool) for the 1881 census.

I have not found any further details of Michael Martin and have been unable to find reference to Ellen Martin (death cert) in the GRO index. Perhaps Ellen was just visiting Liverpool in 1881. Did she and Michael die in Ireland?

I would appreciate any help in tracing Tom's parents and siblings.

Pauline
