Can anyone inform me of the most likely route taken to get from Newry, County Down to America around 1850?

What would be the normal point of departure?

Did "international" shipping depart from Newry, Dublin or some other nearby Irish port or would it be usual to catch a smaller boat to Liverpool and board there?

Is it possible that a ship might pick up passengers at various Irish ports and then spend some time re-provisioning in Liverpool before setting out on the long journey? How frequently would ships leave Liverpool?

I also wonder about the route taken once the ship left Liverpool and the time taken to reach America. On arrival, what would be the most likely port to disembark?

I have an O'Connor family who left Newry in late 1851- early 1852. The wife was taken off the ship in Liverpool to give birth. The birthdate was recorded as 2nd February 1852. I presume the journey was recommenced shortly afterwards.

Could anybody help with suggestions for shipping departures (from Ireland or Liverpool) or arrivals in appropriate ports in USA during calendar year 1852.

Peter in Sydney.
