Some people have a better "ear" for accents and can assume a new accent
easily. Others never get the hang of it and carry their original accents
for the rest of their lives.
I once knew a lady who had been in the US for more than 50 years and not
only still had her heavy accent but also spelled with a German accent! I
sometimes had to have her rewrite my paycheck because instead of Lloyd she
would write Loydt.
Both of your ancesters may have been from the same place.
