In researching the HADDENS of Co. Tyrone, allied families include the McMAHONS and WORTHINGTONS of Dernabane townland, Carnteel Parish.
These related families are in the Co. Tyrone Freeholder's list published in "The Strabane Morning Post" in 1829. Arthur McMahon signed his intention to register his freehold at the same time and right beside the names of Martin Worthington (also of Dernabane) and Joseph Hadden and John Hadden of Goland.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name / Address of Applicant / Barony / Townland
Joseph Hadden, Goland, D'gannon, Goland
Arthur M’Mahon, Dernabane, " , Dernabane
Martin Worthington, " , " , "
John Haddin, Goland, " , Goland
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arthur McMahon of Dernabane had married Jane Worthington by 1823, judging by the Carnteel parish registers, and Martin Worthington of Dernabane (believed to be Jane Worthington's brother) married Eliza Jane Hadden, daughter of Joseph Hadden (Sr.) of Goland, by 1829. Hadden descendants living in Ireland in the 1920s-1950s still knew the McMahons as relatives.
The Tithe Applotment Books of Ireland show Arthur McMahon at Dernabane in 1827, and Griffith's Valuation of Ireland also shows Arthur McMahon at Dernabane (note: Griffith's was completed in 1859 for Co. Tyrone). With a 30-year time difference, the Arthur McMahon of 1859 could be the son of Arthur McMahon of 1827-1829.
I've only found one child of Arthur McMahon and Jane Worthington in research so far: "Hugh, son of Arthur McMahon and Jane Worthington his wife of Dernabane, born 20 Sept, bap. 27 Sept. 1823, Reg. Jno. Groves [curate]." -- transcribed from Carnteel parish register of births, baptisms, marriages, page 9, #114 (PRONI microfilm 583/27).
Martin Worthington (Jr.) and Jane Worthington's father was apparently Martin Worthington (Sr.): "Martin Wirthington of Dernabaan, in this Parish, died Oct. 14 and buried Oct. 16, 1823, aged 62." - Carnteel parish register. Martin Sr.'s father was apparently Richard Worthington/Wirthington whose name appears in Carnteel parish records from 1766-on.
Any information on other children, descendants, ancestors and allied families of the McMahons, Worthingtons and Haddens of Co. Tyrone would be appreciated.
