Hello Ramona and Listmembers,
Many of you have asked the typical question. "What is a
Freedmen ?"
YOUR QUESTION:
Anyway, that is who I am looking for. I am confused about Freedman and what
that means exactly. Slaves that were made free is what I am figuring. My
ancestors names are in some of what you sent. I have not seen it all, no
time and I don't know what I am looking at. Insight welcome. Indians were
slaves then also so I figure Freedmen could be at least a few dark skinned
races right?
Yes the FREEDMEN were slaves. There were different kinds of
Freedmen:
Freedmen - who were Africans and African Americans
Cherokee- Freedmen
Creek- Freedmen
Seminole-Freedmen
Choctaw- Freedmen
Chickasaw- Freedmen.
Many of these intermarried and some also married into the Caucasian
Race. There were also slaves of Irish, Dutch, Scotch-Irish desent and others
as well.
So I am sending you a link to the FREEDMEN archives, were you will find a
wealth of links and info to answer your questions.
I am also sending the archive links for the first six FREEDMEN REPORTS, and
other info posted on APRIL 2002, just click on that month.
I realize that the DIGEST SUBSCRIBERS, who had all the problems with
gibberish, were not able to recieve what was sent.
One day this week, I will also submit to you all a list of ABBREVIATIONS for
the surname reports, and info on were to find additional info from NARA.
NOTE;
The surname reports will not be sent on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thrusday. If
you want these reports you will have to visit the individual surname archive
listed below.
Should you want copies of the reports, just copy and paste the page and send
it to your self, or print it out.
I will be submitting all the reports to my FREEDMEN-L. at a later date.
