Carol:

Here is the family in 1850:

Samuel F. Matthews, 40, male, farmer, b. NJ
Jane ", 44, f, NJ
Hannah, 17, f, NJ
Lenora A., 14, f, NJ (this is the year that James would have been born in
1836)
Sarah J., 12, f, NJ
Firman, 10, m, NJ
Joseph, 8, m, NJ
Mary E., 7, f, NJ
Leonora Boude, 60, f, NJ

Freehold, Freehold, New Jersey; Roll: M432_456; Page: 170; Image: 347.

I did find a James Matthews that age living in Raritan, Monmouth County, NJ
as a laborer with a Joseph Matthews age,49, laborer, b. NJ and Joseph
Matthews, Jr. age 18, laborer, b. NJ.

Is it possible that James was living with an uncle and helping with labor?
Are you sure that Samuel and Jane are James' parents?

Lucy
